"A large section of Ottoman works of art or antiques
in most of the museums or collections abroad have come out of the Grand Bazaar."

As the Ottomans grew to be an empire from a local state their markets demonstrated the extent of their power. When Istanbul was conquered and became the capitol after Bursa and Edirne, this reflection became even more appearent. And after construction of the Bedesten by Mohammad the Conquerer, the Grand Bazaar became the focal point of all the markets or bazaars.
Here at the Grand Bazaar at that time the diversity and multitude of

commodities displayed reflected the might and splendour of the empire which had already spread to three continents already. Althogh the Bazaar no longer reflects glory of those days, it still maintains its mysterious attraction for millions of tourists.
It is already planned to celebrate the 550th anniversary of the conquest in 2003. It could therefore be an interesting attept to set up a Grand Bazaar museum displaying its 5 centuries old past with documents and objects. A unit set up within this museum collecting information and documents could also interest many tourists while assisting the spoken history of the Bazaar.
The necessary financial support for such a project could be provided by Istanbul Chamber of Commerce or Istanbul Stock exchange or other private organisations. This proposed museum would be of particular interest to tourist who have heard the magnificance of the Ottomn Empire but have not had a chance to see it, through displays in the Bazaar. The museum of this 'town' whose existance is based on trade only should be equipped to reflect its past. A large section of Ottoman works of art or antiques in most of the museums or collections abroad are either made in or bought from the Grand Bazaar.
Therefore there exists a high potential for provision of material for the proposed museum. One of the numerous hans or inns at the Grand Bazaar is an ideal place for this proposed museum. If necessary decisions are made and steps taken to organize, this project could materialize in a short period of time.
